The Matrix Online officially shut down in 2009, but one modder has been working dutifully ever since to restore the MMO to its former glory.
A recent story from Waypoint explores the efforts of that modder, known as Rajko, and recounts the different tricks used and obstacles faced in his ongoing seven-year mission to revive the now defunct online game.

Now, seven years later, he’s still in the process of recreating The Matrix Online. His efforts have yielded a playable version called MXOEmu, but the emulated world only includes the core mechanics of the game.
He’s had to change gears and rebuild the project multiple times already, but he’s closer than ever to recreating The Matrix Online, thanks to his current efforts of migrating game assets into Unreal Engine 4.
